Super Magazines: Theme, Giant Robot and The Royal Magazine!

Artsy people love these expensive design/culture/artsy magazines. I get a subscription to Theme Magazine, which is suppose to be some sorta Asian Quarterly magazine (4 issues a year), Giant Robot (I have no clue, I think a bimonthly), and Royal Magazine (I got for free at some event). I’m not recommending to go out and get copies of these things but they’re not bad so I’ll share some thoughts with you.

So… Have you ever heard about hoarders? You know, people who love to keep everything? I’m sure you’ve got a little of that in your system too. You probably like to collect or keep a lot of bullshit that’s limited edition or sentimental or you think is of value that you could sell one day. Anyway, I’ve got the opposite of that. I used to be a total hoarder but I’ve gotten rid of almost everything I own, other than some clothes, this laptop and a bunch of books (I guess I still hoard books, but I’ve thrown or given many of them away).

I do subscribe to a few magazines and I’m a little bothered by them (because I’m nuts, I just don’t like owning things). Whenever I get them in the mail, I’ll usually HAVE to toss them out in a few days. Before I toss these out though:

Theme Magazine

THEME: I used to be really annoyed of this magazine. When I got this magazine, I was annoyed cause it was so thin for a magazine that only came out 4 times a year. I was always thinking, what the fuck? What the hell are they doing with all that time? Why is this thing so flimsy? Yes, this thing has really nice paper, it’s a glossy with a brushed heavy stock outer cover and it’s 5 bucks a pop since the subscription is 20 bucks a year and you only get 4!

BUT! It has grown on me. I read a little about them, I visited the website, I read the blog and I got a better understanding that it was a magazine started by this married Korean couple who started out as designers and they had good intentions, whatever that means. Anyway, I see it as the Giant Robot magazine of New York. The articles are pretty interesting since they do cover a wide array of subjects. What’s interesting is that their headquarters (office) is near all those street wear boutiques (Alife, Staple, etc.) so I feel like they’re definitely influenced by them (it always has a fashion photography editorial section and a whole section for recommendations of things you should buy).

Oh, anyway, they cover a lot of stuff in various Asian countries, though they do lean towards design and art related matters. It’s not limited to topics outside of the US either, it has a bunch of interesting essays about Asian-Americana, all types of art stuff, fashion, interviews, and great photography, etc. Like Blackbook Magazine, they’ve got a theme for every issue. OH! I get it…. Their latest issue is titled “Inside the Private Journals of…” There’s an article about James Jean. He did the cover.

The wonderful thing about this magazine is the tone. The writers are very respectable and feels genuine. It doesn’t feel like that ‘in your face I’ll do whatever I want’ voice that seems to have gotten so popular the last 10 years. I think the magazine is going on that upmarket route and trying to be very limited edition or uppity cause if you look at their site, they’ll even say they’re very selective of their advertisers. Their clients include Adobe, PF Flyers, Scion and Natural American Spirit Native American cigarette (haha).

It’s a good magazine and I enjoy it enough. It feels somewhat trendy and is meant for leisure reading. See for yourself, they’ve got articles (though not all of them) on their site.

Giant Robot

Giant Robot: It’s an Asian culture magazine that’s based in San Francisco. There’s a whole different style with this thing compared with Theme. They’re definitely more ‘I don’t give a shit’ than Theme though they’re not exactly in your face either.

Eve and the Fire Horse

This looked interesting. I like those Asian American Canadian films that explore how Asians deal with contrasting cultures. This, I think, is one of those:

Clearly I just got a huge kick of Buddha dancing with Jesus, but whatever, I’m sure I’ll download this crap when it’s available for download. Here’s an interview with the director:

Are Social Networking Sites a Must for a Professional?

grandma myspace

Let’s be realistic. Everyone is on one of those queer social networking sites. I’m on Myspace. I’m not proud of it. I don’t like it but that’s a whole mess of people I have slightly more access to because of it.

The Wall Street Journal is funny. They’ve been on Facebook’s ass for the last few weeks. There was an article telling the story of a few office workers whose bosses requested to be their friend on Facebook or Myspace. Of course these office workers either accepted after cleaning up their accounts (took down those embarrassing photos) or denied acceptance, which may have disrupted the worker-boss relationship, though it shouldn’t be that way.

Strange and Awesome: Philippine Prisoners Practicing Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ !

This is strange and amusing. In Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Cebu City, Philippines, about 1,500 prisoners practice the dance choreography from Michael Jackson’s 1983 hit music video ‘Thriller’.

Here you go, here’s another funny post.

I changed my mind. It has grown on me. I liked it. I’m not going to be such a dick about it.

New York City Steam Explosion!

kaboom

I don’t know what happened. Seriously, I was watching TV for 20 minutes yesterday and instead of Seinfeld, which I love and really never know when it’s on, though my understanding is that it’s ALWAYS on, I saw all these videos on the news of steam coming out of the sewer or something. Anyway, this morning, my co-worker, but more like my lackey, told me a man died and I just started laughing.

Tiger in a Tropical Storm! 7.12.07 Review

It was last week, I went to this art show in Williamsburg. Funny thing, I’ve never been to that area before even though I’ve lived in New York City for most of my life, even though it’s the part of Brooklyn that’s been gentrified with a bunch of “artists.”

Neckface Unmasked!

For the longest time Neckface would be wearing his Bat mask or a bandanna covering the lower half of his face to keep his identity a secret.

neck

He’s a New York graffiti artist who wants to make everything ugly but instead of doing that, he has created notoriety for his art and people love the ugliness he creates. If you live in New York City, you’ve seen his work, it looks like this:

This is in Japan. Yeah, I know, whatever, I don’t care, I know I just said you’ve seen his work in NYC and then I put up some picture from Shibuya.

Facebook is wiggity-whack!

Facebook has been in the news lately. It looks like it’s going in the direction of outdoing MySpace. Anyway, I was on that thing for a month and I just got annoyed.

Today is the 10th Anniversary of the Blog, NOT THIS BLOG, but of Blogging or whoever was the first guy to put his diary on the internet, according to the World Street Journal. I started this thing 6 months ago. I am so hip. Tomorrow, I’m going to switch from using a sundial to an analog clock. Givin’ it a try, you know, I like to live dangerously.

Pictures of Tiger in a Tropical Storm to come. Seriously.

Tiger in a Tropical Storm, in Williamsburg! 7.12.07

So some broad named Chloe (It’s really CLO-EEEE) from this gallery in Williamsburg emailed me some info about a tiger art show. I just responded that I liked tigers though I don’t think this really has anything to do with tigers. Seriously, I made an ass out of myself. I was all like, “Yeah! I love tigers, GRRRRR! I eat Frosted Flakes and everything! They’re great!” and then I find out it has nothing or little to do with tigers.

Tiger in a Tropical Storm

Whatever, I’ll bite, here you go, my beautiful readers, go to this goddamned thing, I’m sure they’ll have some free drinks or something, if not the very least I’m sure they’ll have a bunch of artsy-fartsy hot girls who don’t eat enough - which is a good thing, cause you know… you’re a pervert.

Words out of order!

Look what I found on Kaws’ blog. This is pretty cool.

mishmash

I was going to write this whole thing about how Chinese people are bad at English but then I saw this on Kaws’ blog and I was like, Ohhh…. I see, that’s WHY they do that. But yeah, this is pretty wild. I had no trouble reading this at all. I was in awe.

EDIT: Okay, so my sister told me this thing is old. Like 5 years old or something. That’s embarrassing, am I not hip with the internet? Are people not sending these things to me? Whatever, if it’s old, it’s old. What can I do? But listen, get this, I found this OTHER video with this baby dancing to this crazy tribal ooga chacka song, when I get a chance, I’ll post that, I’m sure nobody has seen THAT yet. Anyone want stock advice? I hear Google is gonna be BIG! Here’s a final tip, radio with picture, believe me, NEXT biggest thing!

Sleeping for 14 hours!

Choco Bed

Above: It’s chocolate, I swear

I haven’t done ANYTHING in a while. Seriously. I’ve been going to work and coming home and going to work in this perpetual cycle. However, I did get to sleep for 13 or 14 hours from Friday night to Saturday morning. That must’ve been better than sex, except unlike sex, nobody died.

ADD: Although! Much like sex, I did crap my pants.
