Mike Davison is so friendly. So today, I come outta work and I’m all excited about seeing whatever they got going on at the The JRNL, right? Turns out, totally lame. Then I remembered, AHHH… The Riviera, they’re nearby. Let me just preface by saying how much I absolutely LOVE the Riviera Gallery. They will always have a special place in my heart as the first gallery to snub me. They removed me from their mailing list. AH HA HA HA HA, WHO DOES THAT!? Anyway, I love them even more because of it. But here’s why they uhmm… dislike me.
103 Metropolitan Avenue - storefront
Brooklyn, NY 11211
Exhibition Dates: June 13th - June 22nd, 2008.
Opening Reception: Friday June 13th, 7- 10pm
What was I saying? Mike Davison is awesome. Look at him glistening in his sweat soaked machismo (below). He doesn’t need anyone to hang his shit up for him, HE does it. That may not be a big deal but you walk around Brooklyn and all the guys are androgynous with their skinny jeans and wayfarer glasses. Seriously look at him, he’s all “fucking come to my show, or don’t, whatever, fuck you.” But yeah, his pieces are pretty amazing -high gloss, high contrast, dark reds, mixture of typography, design and art. Oh god, I just wet myself. Don’t be a little bitch, get your ass over there. Say hi to Cloeeeee for me.

In 7 years spent in Chinatown NYC - this white new Zealander (pakeha) felt a clambering for cultural identity. The anonymity and freedom that New York affords one to chose where you “come from” is unique. “I’m Irish but I’ve never been there”.
Mike’s current work around cultural and spiritual identity and osmosis has been influenced by the raw street art and racial minority status he held while in Chinatown, New York.
